What is it?
Derma roller, micro-needling, skin needling – these are all ways to describe a scientifically researched and proven treatment that makes your skin naturally produce new collagen and elastin. The treatment can be applied to all parts of the face and body to help restore skin tightness and thickness, to diminish fine lines, pigmentation marks, scarring, dilated blood vessels, stretch marks and acne scarring and create smoother, brighter and younger looking skin.
As we age, our production of collagen (which gives our skin plumpness and firmness) slows down and elastin is destroyed. Topical creams rich in active vitamins A, C and E are effective and safe ways to restore the skin but will not produce dramatic changes in the elasticity of the dermis (the skin’s lower layer).
To make facial or body skin look younger, we need to stimulate collagen and elastin activity in the dermis. We should certainly not damage the epidermis (the protective outer layer). Laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion and deep chemical peels are all quick fixes to make skin look smoother but they all damage the epidermis, cause sun sensitivity and do not produce new elastin.
How does a derma roller work?
The skin is thoroughly cleansed and a topical anaesthetic applied. A roller of ultra fine surgical needles is moved in multiple directions across the face and neck. The skin reacts to the derma roller in the same way natural healing is stimulated after a pin prick. The small amount of bleeding caused releases powerful growth factors which produce new collagen and elastin. The needles only pierce the epidermis, they do not damage or remove it and healing is rapid. It is the only treatment currently known to produce new elastin.
Immediately afterwards, the skin looks very similar to sunburn. In most cases this starts to subside after 2-3 hours. All the clients we have treated have been able to go to work the next day and it does not cause sun sensitivity. Results improve over 6 weeks and collagen and elastin continue to be produced months after treatment and the effects can last up to 7 years. For best results, a course of 3-6 treatments is recommended at intervals of 1-6 weeks depending on time and budget.
