5 steps for summer legs

The long winter that lasted until April meant our legs were wrapped up nice and cosy in boots, leggings and jeans for longer than usual. After a British winter starved of sunlight, our legs emerge pale, a little furry and dehydrated. Then May arrived and so did the sun and it’s still here.

Here’s 5 easy steps to get your legs ready for a long, hot summer:

1              Tone & tighten

Let’s face it, no matter what we do, not many of us are ever going to have long bronzed slender limbs even if we work out every day. There’s no quick fix but now the sun and warmer weather are here, simply walking more can help tone your legs, thighs and bum. So leave the car at home and start biking or walking. If you need a quicker fix, a CACI bum lift will do the trick, a machine that combines massage with a micro-current to break down fatty deposits and tighten muscles.

2              Exfoliate or brush

Nothing better to slough off dead skin cells and stimulate the circulation. Book into a spa for a full body exfoliation or DIY. ESPA’s body smoothing shower gel is so easy (£27) and leaves your skin feeling soft and so good.

3              De-fuzz

Shave or wax? If you want a baby smooth finish to your legs, waxing is the onlyway. It’s affordable, lasts longer than shaving (normally 5-6 weeks) and removes hair by its root.

The best time to wax is a couple of days after exfoliating. Go for a premium quality wax such as Lycon, the world leader, and in our opinion, fully justified. Once you’ve experienced it, you won’t go back to the cheap stuff. You’ll need to avoid sunbathign, swimming and saunas for 24 hours after waxing. If you decide to shave, wet your legs first and use a decent shaving cream. Don’t use soap.

4              Hydrate

Regular moisturising will keep that dry winter look at bay. If you’re heading out into the sun, make sure your moisturiser contains an SPF or just use a good quality sun cream. Remember no matter how how the SPF, you need to re-apply suncream regularly. One application will NOT last all day. Also make sure you apply a good coating. People are always surprised when they burn, especially when they’ve used factor 50. The reason is they have not applied a generous enough layer and have not re-applied during the day.

5              Let them glow

A spot of colour can do marvels for legs in shorts or floaty summer dresses. Opt for a gradual tan like ESPA’s Gradual Tan Moisturiser (£35). The results are subtle and it gradually builds up to a perfect colour. The Sunday Times raved about this product last summer. For a quick fix we recommend Vita Liberata’s multi-award winning Body Blur (£29.95). The light reflecting particles in Body Blur give a truly flawless finish and it’s great for covering up thread veins and imperfections. The formula is free from all parabens, perfumes, alcohols and toxins, and is bursting with natural and organic skincare extracts including shea butter and aloe vera. Both brands are perfect for sensitive skin.

If you don’t want to tan, but need to even out skin tone, treat your legs like your face and use a foundation for instant coverage. You could add a dusting of bronzer too or some highlighter along your shin bone for an extra summer glow.
